My 100 Demons series began in 2021, and the 100 drawings of the series was completed in 2023. The title of these works is inspired in part by the pre-modern Japanese folkloric tradition ‘The Night Parade of 100 Demons’ where supernatural creatures explode into the human world at night and create pandemonium. I’ve also been researching the demon as an entity in religion, folklore, literature and mythology, and its relationship to evil. My demons are like creatures from a ghostly psychic netherworld, that seemingly embody fleeting thoughts or feelings hovering between the tangible and intangible. Characters that if unchecked, might wreak havoc on an interior - or possibly exterior - world. They give form to something ethereal; ghoulish yet endearing. Together, ‘100 Demons’ form a monumental work, an ensemble of spirits that are metaphors for inner psychological processes.
