These masks are symbolic of what is hidden or repressed. The ‘Tree Spirits’ series derives from Pace’s fascination with forests as places of real and metaphorical darkness, symbolic of the hidden realm of the subconscious. Other series include minerals, found hidden in the earth’s crust - such as Azurite and Amethyst - and the ‘Sea Nymphs’, often referred to as Nereids in Greek mythology, which are female spirits associated with the sea. The sea is also symbolic of the hidden depths of the subconscious.
