Installation detail: ‘Tree Spirits' series, glazed ceramic, (2020—22). Exhibited in Shadders, group exhibition, 2025.
These masks, created in series, act as symbols of what is hidden or repressed. The ‘Tree Spirits’ series derives from Pace’s fascination with forests as places of real and metaphorical darkness, symbolic of the hidden realm of the subconscious. Other series include ‘Rocks & Minerals’, as if unearthed from being buried in the earth’s crust - such as Azurite and Amethyst - and the ‘Sea Nymphs’ (often referred to as Nereids in Greek mythology) which are female spirits associated with the sea. The reference to the sea is as symbol of the unknown depths of the subconscious.
