Installation detail: Tree Spirits series, glazed ceramic, (2020—22). Exhibited in Shadders, group exhibition, 2025.
Created in series or ‘species’, these works bring to mind associations with plants, animals, meteorological effects and minerals; there is rough scaly skin and downy pelt; moss and bark; iridescent shell and shimmering rock.
The Tree Spirits series derives from Pace’s fascination with forests as places of real and metaphorical darkness, symbolic of the hidden realm of the subconscious. Other series act directly as symbols of what is hidden or repressed, including Rocks & Minerals, that appear as if unearthed from being deeply buried in the earth’s crust, such as Azurite and Amethyst. The Sea Nymphs series are female spirits associated with the sea, which here acts as symbol of the unknown depths of the subconscious..
