Sea Change, solo exhibition, Berwick Gymnasium Art Gallery, 2009. Ambiguous, amphibian creatures are the eerie and fantastical protagonists of Kim L Pace’s unfolding narrative ‘Sea Change’ which includes drawings, objects and animated film. Pace depicts a world in flux, where humans migrate into bizarre and amazing forms, inspired by Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’ and Mary Shelley’s ‘Transformation’, alongside myths, stories and superstitions associated with the sea and in particular, the Northumbrian coastline. Her mysterious and compelling underwater world in the animation ‘Depth Wish’, suggests a cautionary tale: the mermaid-like animated creature appears to tell us something, although ultimately gasps for life on dry land as the film concludes. The installation entitled ‘Sea Change’ was produced whilst Kim held the Berwick Gymnasium Artist Fellowship, funded by English Heritage and ACE.
